ANNOUNCEMENT: NCAV Member At-Large Mike Littlejohn
So Ya Wanna Take Yer Skills on the Road:
It’s great that you want to join the excitement of a Volleyball Tournament. Imagine
your typical weekend league, multiplied by tons more people generating an
exorbitant amount of energy, and a weekend of fun, socializing, and fine tuning your
game to come back and show off the new you.
But to do this, there are definitely things you need to know and prepare before flying
off into the thrilling whirlwind that is a Tournament.
First you need a Man:
Or a woman, or even that braniac teen from Head from Head of the Class will do. You
want to choose a Captain, who will keep their eye on the big picture, and stays
informed with what is going on with your preparation. Although it’s a great idea to
delegate some of the responsibilities, there should be one contact for many of the
things you will see below.
Then you need a Plan:
There is a lot to take care of before you hit the road. Making a plan (including a
budget and calendar of dates, deadlines, and cut-off dates will make the preparation
process much smoother.
Find a Tournament:
The majority (but not all) of the Gay Volleyball Tournaments can be found through the
North America Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA) website www.nagva.org .
Get the Details:
Make sure you pull as much information about the league as you can. Check out
contact names, facilities information, registration deadlines, fees, and rules. Share this
with your team, so they may help keep everything on track.
Pull it all together:
Take all of your raw data and put together a Budget and Schedule.
Budget:
Keep in mind there are a lot of expenses to account for. Doing so will give you a
better idea of what this venture will cost you (or give you a more accurate goal for
your fundraising). Budgets also come in handy when approaching entities for
sponsorships (they like to know where their money is going). In addition to tournament
fees, some other costs you can expect to incur:
Hotel:
You don’t have to stay at the Host hotel, if there is one, but the tournament will usually
have deals set up at those venues);
Flights to your destination;
Uniforms – most tournaments require matching ones which meet certain criteria
(specifications should be in your registration information);
Schedule:
Make a true time line, incorporating the information from your budget, as well as
travel dates, team practice dates, possible fundraiser dates, registration cut-offs, etc.
The more detailed you are in your plan, the less likely you will be surprised or forget a
major point.
Don’t Forget to Play:
We definitely mean practice. The adage “The whole is greater than the sum of its
parts” holds true here. 6 great players who don’t gel or haven’t played together will
not fair as well as a team who has gotten to know how their mates play the game.
Along with practicing, don’t forget to play. This is supposed to be fun, right? Don’t
forget that as you are hanging out together. It helps reduce stress, makes you a better
player, and really helps the team dynamic.
Soon you’re on Your Way:
As you go through the process, you may find even more pieces to making your trip a
success. The best part of these journeys is that each is unique, and you are always
finding fun surprises along the way. Hopefully this list helps you get started on your own
journey. But remember, you’re surrounded by people who have done it as well. If you
come across something that confuses you, feel free to ask. We all know how much
we love to give advice, right?
